if you’re irish with an opinion cmere to me a second

If you’re other people with opinions cmere but careful now

I would have stood on the side that would speak English

I don’t see how that makes me ashamed of the Irish language? It’s just being considerate.

Yes Irish is our language but it’s really not a language we should expect everyone to know, especially with more and more people living in this country who aren’t even irish

Yes it’s sad that people don’t use the language very much any more, but that’s just the way it is. Speaking English has bettered the country with trading and communication with other countries etc because English is such a universal language. Irish isn’t.

It’s a part of our old culture that people are trying to keep alive, but I believe the way it’s taught in schools (well non irish speaking schools) that they are teaching it really wrong. We are made learn about stories and poems and alliteration and all the things you would learn in an English class but in Irish. This seems to be because the education system feels because Irish is our language we should be treating it as equally as English. But most Irish people can’t have a conversation in Irish. If they got rid of (and they did get rid of a lot of it when I finished school) all the plays and poems and stories and made Irish a lesson where you learned how to speak the language, maybe you would see more people actually being able to do so in everyday life.

But yeah I’ve gone on for ages now, all I’m saying is it’s not being ashamed of your countries language, it’s not like the Irish have been utilising it any good up til now.
